Entourages

Another thing I don't really get are entourages.

To be followed everywhere you go by people who aren't doing it because they like you but because you're paying them to be at your beck and call- and never to have a moment to yourself- that would drive me crazy. Listen, I don't need someone to fetch me a cup of tea or file my nails for me; I can do those things for myself; it's even good for me; it's exercise...

Rich people spend their money on the weirdest things.

I have to say that if I were stinking rich, I would probably have someone come in to shampoo my hair at least weekly, just because that is my favourite part about going to the hairdresser is someone who can give great shampoos.

But other than a very few things like that, if we ever hit the really BIG money, I don't think we would change the life we have now at all.

I sometimes ask myself what I'd do if I came into really big money- and I can never think of anything.

Would I like a big house with extensive grounds? No, not really...

No, I wouldn't fancy huge grounds, even with being able to hire people to do the work. I actually like what we have now, which is about 120 square metres and we are on about a third of an acre and that is more than enough for our needs.

It would be nice if we had the funds to travel more, but we have done a lot of travelling and if no more is on the books, well, we won't grieve over that. But it is just small things along the lines of "it would be nice if we could ..."

We have several acres here at my mother's house and it's nice to have them to stroll around- but they need looking after and they're a responsibility and when we move from here I don't really want anything more than a pocket handkerchief sized garden- if that.

Oddly enough, just today I was telling my piano teacher about this longstanding pipe dream...

I love the idea of having a chauffeur, even if the car he or she drives is an old clunker. I could never see why a rich person would buy a car for more than $100,000 every year or so and drive it him or herself. If I had that kind of cash, I'd hire a part-time chauffeur right now.

Ailz loves driving and I don't have a licence so you might say I already have a live-in chauffeur...

In Rose Tremain's Music and Silence the King of Sweden's
private orchestra is housed in the cellar under the Great Hall- and their music filters up through cunningly concealed vents.
