A Regeneration Is Pending

The Smith era tried my patience and the Capaldi era broke it. My quarrel wasn't with either actor, of course, but with the head writer/showrunner. What finally killed my loyalty was the episode where the Doctor spent several billion years knocking down a wall of some substance harder than diamond with his bare knuckles in order to secure a few more years of human existence for Clara Oswald. At that point I felt cleverness was not only winning out over intelligence but positively stamping on its head.

But the news that we're going to be getting a new Doctor to go with the new showrunner revives my interest. Chibnall has already written for the series- and not very well- but Broadchurch was excellent and I'm willing to give him my attention- at least to begin with. The hoo-ha surrounding the appointment of a new Doctor is always fun- and- as with Prime Ministers- you can be pretty sure the front runner isn't going to get it. David Tennant- the definitive modern Doctor- was on Radio 4 at lunchtime and gave his vote to Olivia Colman. Oh, how I wish...

Oh, the wall-punching thing annoyed me too. Apart from anything else, why not kick it? He's wearing Doc Martens!

Le sigh. I thought the trilogy of the last three episodes of Series 9 (Face the Raven / Heaven Sent / Hell Bent) were a fabulous cohesive unit, with the subsequent Christmas special a poignant lagniappe. I'm going to miss Peter Capaldi. Kicking that wall with his Doc Martens wouldn't have had the same impact, figuratively or literally. And to blow a hole in the wall a la Ace, he would have had to have had Ace's backpack now, wouldn't he?

I didn't help that the characterisation of Clara was all over the place. She wasn't a person, more a bundle of desirable attributes- and I just couldn't see why the Doctor was so smitten with her.

I'm with you about the writer ruining the show. I've held onto it - mostly by repeatedly rewatching older Who and Torchwood, reminding myself why Doctor Who means so much to me - but I disagree about Capaldi leaving the show. He's an excellent actor who I think brought a lot to the role, and I was hoping for a chance to see him stretch his wings without Moffat's ego.

Capaldi is an very good actor and it would have been good if he'd done a season without Moffat. On the other hand I think I'm happier for there to be a completely fresh start- new showrunner, new writers, new cast.

Disagree about completely fresh start -- I prefer some continuity, as when Billie Piper stayed on with Tennant. Assuming she's not a total wreck, I hope Pearl Mackie stays on as companion for some continuity.
