Everything I might want to say about the accession of Donald Trump is being said better than I could possibly say it- and from a position of authority that I cannot command- by [livejournal.com profile] craig_murray. I urge you all to read him- and add him to your friend's list.

Following the analogy of the stopped clock being right twice a day, I do agree with Trump that Russia is not America's enemy and that better relations between the countries would be a good thing. I also don't believe that Hillary lost the election due to Russian hacking and the "dossier" about Trump's shenanigans is most likely fake. However, my main concern is what happens when the people who voted for him realise that most of what he's promised is just not possible and not within his power to deliver.

However, I take issue with Craig Murray in that his piece was all about the economy. He is completely ignoring the legitimate fears of many Americans, particularly women. Trump and Pence pose a serious risk to the rights and lives of Americans who aren't cis white heterosexual and male. Also, I don't think the majority of protesters are protesting about the legitimacy of his appointment. They are, however, exerting their right to protest and make their views felt about his policies.

The next few years may be turbulent. And rights that have been taken for granted may have to be fought for- but we'll see. Trump hasn't actually done anything yet.

I can't find the article on the BBC site now, but earlier today I was reading that Trump has already put things in motion to repeal the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). That is going to hurt a lot of poor Americans, including plenty of the people who voted for him.

I believe that's the case.

It's repeal-and-replace and I suspect it's going to be Kabuki -- tinker around the edges and convince his base that he done good. I'm sure his handlers know that if he makes a Big Mess there will be a big push for single payer in 2018-2020, and there go all those Big Pharma and Big Insurance payoffs.

I imagine there's quite a lot of competition for that title.

Sorry Britishers, I have it on good authority that humanity now only includes patriotic Americans.

I don't suppose we'll complain if Trump overlooks us.

Murray appears to be in with Assange, which makes me a bit suspicious of him.
