Fake news is obviously a nuisance but reporting that selects its facts and spins the ones it uses- which is to say most reporting in the main-stream media- is equally pernicious- and perhaps more so because it takes greater effort and subtlety to unpick a half-truth than it does to dismiss a flat-out lie.

This is exactly what makes it laughable and ridiculous to actually cry out loud about fake news from the internet. What are the mainstream media outlets doing themselves? They talk about a possible Russian invasion that doesn't take place since whenever-who-knows-the-fuck-when, they talk about rebels in a positive manner what fights down in Syria for more than 5 years and they turned out to be India Sierra a few years ago which are even worse than Al K. from Afghanistan (which they also keep silent about that the West supported them only to give the Soviet Union their own Vietnam war trauma). They fucking spread fake news about VIPs, they fucking spread assumptions and speculative talking and sell that as "news" while it's only how air and a whole lot of nothing - "What does Putin today?" -; so what is this? Truth? Only when it's the day where everyone means the opposite of what he's saying.
One can rather consider this as another plan to discredit the new news supply from media outlets that exist mostly through the internet that didn't exist like 5 years ago and didn't reach such a great audience. Before it was all "Russian propaganda", now it's fake news because it's stuff they don't want to hear, but nobody's gonna believe them this attribute anymore - and the cover to justify the own actions is the ridiculous infowars stuff and shit people believe in anyway when they want to have an explanation for not getting the world to run as they want.

For you and me, perhaps. But for a greater number of people, I am not so sure. Being told something you want to believe (or at least "fits" your world view) can be very tenacious.

Yes indeed, most of us are reluctant to entertain any "truths" that threaten our world view.
