The river Medway is crossed by a wonderful assemblage of medieval bridges.

I love how the sloping of the piers is spilt in two; it's such a nice way of adding an ornamental touch to what is actually a very strictly functional piece of engineering.

In that sense, some medieval bridges are very much related to the bridges of Santiago Calatrava who also makes the construction into an ornament. I like that thought; plus ça change and all that...

(Also I just love bridges in general.)
