Featuring some ancient barges and the QEII Bridge. I like the bridge. I like how simple it is. And I like the area; it's got a lot of energy. The energy comes from the river itself and also from all the human industry that crowds its banks. My grandfather grew up at Erith a few miles upriver and my father was born there.

Cable-stayed bridges are my favourites; they are so clean and simple - and you can "read" the construction directly in terms of compression and tension.

Form follows function- always a recipe for good design.

Firmitas, utilitas and venustas - as Vitruvius would have said. ;-)

Seville has a suspension bridge like that over the river. It's an inland port city so the look is very similar. I love our bridge as well.

I don't think I've ever met a bridge I didn't like.

A lovely photo. I don't know that area at all - but that's how I always picture the Thames...
