The tower is 14th century, the rest of the church is Victorian. I got into conversation with a local who apologized for his church being so dull- and recommended me to others in the neighbourhood that had more to offer.

We managed to get into Burham old on our recent walk.

One that the Victorians thankfully ignored and built a new one closer in, which has since had to be demolished (tee hee).

Sometimes the Victorians had no choice but to rebuild a crumbling church. I don't know what the case was here, but they did a pretty thorough job.

Charles Augustus Welby Pugin has a lot to answer for!

I'm not a fan of Pugin. I think he is responsible for much ugliness.

That's kind of sad. It looks to be a lovely tower.

Being from the U.S., Victorian Gothic is the only kind of Gothic I saw for many years, and it's comfortingly familiar.

(And being a Lutheran, I'm resigned to many of our newer churches looking more like grain elevators than any species of Gothic.)

The tower is, apparently, rare for Sussex in being built of stone, not wood and tile.

I rather like that sturdy looking tower, though.

It's a good tower.
