Joining Isis is the sort of damn silly thing you do when your life stinks- as this true story in the Guardian explains. I became a Born-Again Christian (way back in the mists of time) for very similar reasons.  You get into a rut- and are living without grace or truth - and then someone dangles a vision of something pure and purposeful under your nose and you take the bait.

This guy was lucky. Or had enough about him to resist the indoctrination. And then he returned to tell us what it was like on the inside- which turns out to be very much as it was on the outside- but with extra layers of cruelty.

You're just full of surprises.

Did you become a Born-Again Christian over there or here in the States?

It was over here.

It lasted a year or two.

I consider myself born again. However I do not participate closely with organized religion. I feel spiritual but I don't buy the BS parts of it. I was raised in a different Christian religion, so I can smell the BS a mile away. I still have compassion for strongly rule bound religious, but I wouldn't want to marry one or anything that close.

Other things that set off my religious BS alarms, are the union folks who call each other "brother", atheists who are so so so offended by religious people, and leftist activists who are really behaving like rightists though they don't realize it.

I believe that humans are hard wired to have something bigger than themselves to believe in, and I find it a bit funny when they reject religion, then find religious-like activities to fill in the void that is left.

I've had on-off relations with organised religion for most of my life. I kept joining groups- and then leaving. I think I'm proof against joining anything now.
