Humbling

Seeing a full-grown tree lying on the ground is a humbling experience. They're such big things. It's like being in the presence of a whale.

many years ago...we had the Labor Day storm and it look down a LOT of trees. I went to a local park with a friend, and the thing I found totally amazing was the root balls for the trees that were blown down. Way taller than I am (of course, I"m short)...

This tree's root ball is relatively small- and that was the problem, I suppose; it just wasn't very well anchored.

I looked at the picture you posted, looked like it had shallow roots. We (used to have) willow trees here and they are notoriously shallow rooted - often they would come down in windstorms despite their flexibility

We keep losing trees. I suppose we should be thinking of planting new ones.

About three years ago we had a very rainy June, and when a Mighty Wind came roaring through late in the month, a lot of big trees came down because the ground was saturated and couldn't help anchor them.

The ground here is saturated too. I suppose that was probably a factor.

Some years back, I had a red oak blown over on our property. The bole was easily three feet at its widest. The most shocking thing was how much it filled the garden, once it was down. Humbling, indeed.

They don't seem so big when all they're filling is sky.

I think I posted about finally shifting the branch that came down in the storm at Christmas. It was just a branch and it was huge!

I look at the tree and think of all the man/hours it's going to take to shift it. The last time we lost a tree we left the trunk in place on the ground because carting it off the premises would have been such a major operation.
