We had this person visit our bird feeder this morning. The picture hardly does him justice- the neck shimmering from deep purple to sea green, the body from bright bronze to shocking pink. And to think some people are crass enough to shoot his kind for fun!

We have tons of them around here. The males are particularly gorgeous. I could never shoot one or eat one either. I would rather see them strutting around.

I suppose there's someone nearby who raises them for sport. I've seen pheasants on our property before, but not very often.

I don't believe I've ever been able to study a live pheasant at such close quarters before.

I could do without him and his wives and children constantly trying to throw themselves under my wheels, mind.

I'm always fascinated by their profound disdain for flight. =:) They'll happily go on lengthy cross-country walks, especially in small groups, only resorting to flying if absolutely necessary.

I think it must take quite a lot of energy to get such a heavy body off the ground.

He's impressive even in a photograph!

The picture was taken through a not very clean window. I've increased the definition and saturated the colour but it still doesn't really do him justice.

What a handsome fellow! They were an introduced species and not native to England, right? I know there is a variety of ring-necked pheasant native to North America but this one looks more colourful than the kind I have seen.

I believe They originate in central Asia but they've been here since Roman times. Yes, That surprised me too. I thought they were a much more recent import.

That IS surprising! I would have thought the were introduced much more recently also.

He's quite handsome! I had the pleasure of getting to see some of his distant cousins from Hawaii during my vacation there, and they were quite pretty as well!

They're a common sight over here, but I don't believe I've ever got this close- not to a wild one anyway.

I wouldn't shoot anything for fun, but you have to admit, pheasant is mighty tasty!
