Power Cut

Obviously I don't enjoy powercuts, but yesterday when the lights came back on just after I'd lit and distributed my candles I felt a twinge of regret.

It felt good to have managed the crisis so capably.

And candlelight is beautiful.

I managed a group show gallery opening reception during a powercut with candles, flashlights, etc. People ran home and got more. Eventually we had the place candlelit enough for people to move safely through it and we could hand each guest a flashlight to view the art. It was a little sad when the power came back on, halfway through!

I'd have felt the same.

That sounds quite magical, even if fleetingly. ^_^

We spent a night in a village in the north of Moldova and there was a power cut in the evening (and no wifi!). We really enjoyed that evening talking in front of the fireplace. We got to know each other more in that evening than we did in the past two weeks it seemed.

Candlelight, firelight- they're both magical...

And very intimate in a way.

Because having a small light in one part of a room intensifies the surrounding darkness.

One New Year's Eve there was a power cut in large parts of Cumbria, so we re-worked our dinner menu, light candles and spent the evening singing and playing board games in front of the fire place.

In my holiday home, though, there's a well with an electric pump and no hand pump, so I keep a store of bottled water in case of power cuts - and then I can flush the loo with a bucket of water from the water butts! (Actually, this will be tested out a week from now when my Mum and her boyfriend come over to help me demolish a wall... I rather want the power turned off for that exercise!)

A convivial evening by firelight and candlelight sounds good.

I'm spoiled by the extreme reliability of modern electrical power!

On those rare occasions when it goes out, rather than complain about it, I do kind of enjoy spending an hour or an evening by flashlight.

As long as it's not in the morning when I'm trying to get ready for work, then it makes me grumpy.

I suppose we have two or three power cuts each winter.

Beautiful, but not the best to read by if you are going slowly blind like I am.
