Ailz bought a thing advertised as a Squirrel Hotel. It's a little wooden house- like a Swiss cottage. You fill it with peanuts and the squirrels reach in through the front door and help themselves.

I put it in a spot a climbing animal should have no difficulty reaching and waited.

The tits found it first. You see them flying away with whole peanuts in their beaks. But the squirrels remain oblivious to it and are still raiding the bird feeder- which they can only get at by clambering up a pole and leaping a five foot gap.

I guess as long as they all get fed, everybody's a winner?

I had a wild goose attacking one of my bird feeders the other day... They're really not that graceful when trying to perch on a feeder board! It quickly gave up and went back to raiding the fields around my garden instead.

We've never had anything that big. Pigeons and woodpeckers are our largest visitors.

There are a few hundred wild geese spending their winter in the fields around my garden before returning North in spring. Big, scary birds!

And feeding a flock of 2-300 geese would bankrupt me in no time... I can manage the great tits, blue tits, sparrows, a single robin and a pair of blackbirds, though. I seem to also be feeding a vole, though with the roots of my plants. Voles are cute, though, so I don't mind. Also endangered in Denmark, so I'm not allowed to mind anyway.

We have all of those- except the voles. Or, at least, if we have voles I've never seen them. We have shrews, though, the cat brings them home to play with.

Shrews are cute as well... I guess I rather like all animals except the ones that make their way into my house. (Large, black spiders are NOT among my favourite animals, but I guess they're still better than having mice or rats.)

I want about a gazillion different animals in my garden. Even the ones that aren't terribly cute or pretty.

I quite like spiders. Or- put it another way- they have their place- like the corner of the ceiling but not in my hair or floating dead in the bathwater.

I don't really mind the spiders that make a cobweb and stay there, but the hunting spiders really give me the creeps when they run across the floor, so I loose all my normal "all animals are wonderful" and find a rolled-up newspaper...

I'm left wondering whether they'd press all the buttons on the lift, just for the hell of it. And then blame others when said conveyance inevitably broke down during peak usage.

You've got to admire them.
