Julia says the donkey house is full of sewage. I think it's just rainwater and silt, but I can't be sure. Either way our drainage system isn't coping with what's being thrown at it right now.

I wish I understood drainage systems. I also wish I knew quite what ours consisted of. Do we have soakaways? I think we do. Are the septic tank and the drains interconnected? No idea.

I went online, One of the sites I visited said, "There is one thing certain about a septic tank soakaway- IT IS DOOMED TO FAIL,"

Shit.

Is the bogginess of the lower field a symptom of septic tank failure? Could well be.

But at least the area of worst flooding is at a distance from the house.

Kirstie arrived late this morning; she said she was having to negotiate huge puddles. Anya says, cheerfully, that there's snow on the way.

Septic tank soakaways are not doomed to fail, but they do require some maintenance; normally no more than once every decade or two - as all drains do.. And the soakaways are probably not related to sogginess in the lower field - nor should they cause sewage to rise into the donkey house.

(My house has a septic tank with a soakaway, so I've been doing a fair bit of research on it...)

Chances are, the lower field is just boggy because it's been raining a lot, and would be whether your house was there or not.

Thanks for that. It's reassuring.

My normal road to the station here was impassable this morning, due to an indeterminate extent of water, and ominous puddles are appearing in the station car park. The past couple of weekends I've noticed a distinct squelch when walking across the grass. It's not been as concentrated or dramatic as the flooding in northern Britain, but it's definitely been a very wet winter so far.
