New Year

There's no one living- or partying- at the big house at the moment- so no fireworks were let off in my vicinity- and for the first time in decades I slept through the turning of the year.

Last year's resolution was to watch more movies and drink more wine. I sort of kept it, though my enthusiasm for the movies tailed off after a few months; I've seen all the old movies- and the new movies are just like the old movies only gaudier and worse. The wine is delivered in boxes from a well-known wine merchant's and I open a bottle every now and then. Towards the end of the year I developed- or redeveloped- a taste for drinking beer in pubs. I like the beer to be locally brewed and the pubs to be 15th century.

I haven't made any resolutions for this coming year.

Beer drinking is fine. Made no resolutions either.

I thought you'd approve of the beer...

I watched Mr. Turner this week. I enjoyed it for all the 19th century Britishness. Very exotic.

God only knows whether the 19th century was really like that- but Mike Leigh and his cast tell a convincing story.

Oh, there's wonder and beauty to be found in films now - just consider The Fountain, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Upstream Color (especially if you like Tarkovsky's Stalker or Solaris), Inside Out, Brave, or Cloud Atlas. And The Danish Girl looks most promising, too, but I haven't yet seen it.

An ideal pub is somewhere I can enjoy a good range of beers and ciders, in a cozy setting, ideally with good food on offer as well. Just good beer and cider - well, Sainsbury and Waitrose between them cover a lot of ground, even if no chain can ever manage any real degree of locality. So, a good, friendly environment I'm happy to go out to, plus a variety I can't enjoy back home, does make for an inviting combination.

(BTW, if you're inclined to join CAMRA, one of the membership perks is 40 x 50p coupons good at Wetherspoons, good on any cask ale or real cider, spread across the four quarters of the year)
