The churchyard- looking towards the South Downs

Monument to Charles Sergison- naval bureaucrat, died 1732, by Thomas Adey. Truth is admiring herself in a mirror while holding a portrait of the late Mr Sergison. The monument- which is enormous- occupies the north east corner of the chancel and towers over the altar. The vicar of the day said he didn't want it there but got leant on by Mr Sergison's grieving (and wealthy) friends and relations.

Interesting that Truth holds a mirror: in medieval iconography it's the mark of one of the deadly sins (Vanity, perhaps?). I wonder when that changed...

Well, I don't suppose Mr Sergison was a stranger to Vanity either.

Thanks.

We do't get much sunlight in November, but when it's there it's as well to grab it.

Is that another Victorian steeple? It looks out of character with the rest. Great photo of the churchyard!

Well spotted. The spire is in fact modern. The old one- dating from the 14th century- was destroyed in a fire and replaced by a replica in 1981.
