Much Marcle also has one of the finest collections of 18th century headstones I've ever come accross.

The third of these is really strange- with the big scowling head and the little scowling head and the bold abstract patterning. I've never seen anything like it before.

Those are lovely. I wish more of those 18th century memorials had survived the Victorian "improvers" in our local churchyards...

The third one looks much earlier in style - was the date legible?

No, there isn't a date visible, but I'm thinking it's the work of the same mason as #4. There's the same scowling face- only with #4 there are wings attached- so it's definitely an angel- though not one I'd want showing up at my deathbed.

I suspect both are earlier than the other two. I associate that kind of high-relief carving with the late 17th century. It's the norm in Scotland, but much rarer in England.
