The three heaps of damp wood in the lower field are getting damper and damper. I managed to keep one of Matthew's fires going until yesterday evening (by "going" I mean smouldering and responsive to occasional pokes) but the rain last night has killed it.
We had neighbors at camp who loved fires. And if the wood was too damp to burn, there was always gasoline. I'm not suggesting you do that, I'm just remembering the smell of gasoline, the click of the lighter and the BOOM and whoosh of flame. Somehow those fires never smelled as good as the others.
