I was picking red currants this morning. I think I'm the only one in the family who really likes them. Ailz says they need to be cooked up with sugar, but I'm happy to eat them straight off the bush.

I was picking blackcurrants too. Now they do need to be cooked. The raw fruit has a slightly meaty taste and texture.

Ailz is wrong about the red currants. They are so fresh and delicious when they are raw. And pretty, which is also important!

I was thinking I should have had my camera with me when I was rootling among the bushes this morning.

I think I agree with Ailz...I love redcurrant jam but not the raw berries so much.

I like red currants every-which-a-way.

I think I'd simply turn them into jam, personally. ^_^ I'm not huge on berries generally, but redcurrant can be superb in cooking, whether whole in sauces, as a glaze, or a gently fruity influence.

I wonder if cherimoya can be grown in the UK? (aka "custard apples") They're quite popular in Australia, deservedly - the flesh does indeed taste quite a lot like good custard, though they're rather pippy.
