The chap commemorated in this memorial was Henry VIII's barber and body servant. The four figures surrounding the entablature are believed to represent Brazilian tribespeople. If so, these are the earliest representations of Native Americans in English art. Here's a detail.


This is 16th century but looks amazingly like the work of Eric Gill.

Heavens! So it does. Harman the barber made out like a bandit in the dissolution, I read. His sons are terrifying, little staring goblins who will eat you up.

It looks a lot like Mayan art. I hope those aren't someone's testicles. I understand they figured prominently in old English punishments.

I think they're yams or gourds or something like that. Harman may have been an importer.
