Rats were nesting in the bed of heathers under the dining room window so (as you may remember) I cleared the heathers out with a scythe. Matthew told me they wouldn't grow again and suggested we plant pumpkins. "Really?" I said. "Yes," he said, "They have lovely big leaves,"

So apologies to [livejournal.com profile] artkouros; he suggested pumpkins too and I'm afraid I didn't take him seriously.

And you can get some of those plastic molds and grow them to look like famous people.

Pumpkins are beautiful plants, and if they get enough water they quickly spread to cover a large area. Just make sure to have some bricks or stones ready when the pumpkins develop; it's best to keep them off the ground so they don't rot or get too infested with pests.

Thanks for the tip. No shortage of stones and tiles round here.

-And of course there's pumpkin carving to look forward to! I found that immensely fun... (And really not hard at all to make something interesting that goes beyond the regular jack-o-lantern!)

I haven't carved a pumpkin for a few years now but I'm looking forward to having another go.

Last year was the first time I ever carved a pumpkin... I googled for wood cuts, then used one of the images as my inspiration for the cutting. I could have been more ambitious, though; it really wasn't hard to do the curvy lines, so next year I will do something more challenging.

They are also great at killing weeds by shading out everything. One farmer I worked for used them for clearing fields - after a few years of pumpkins, the field was free of weeds and shrubs.

That'll make Matthew's life easier.
