We let the cat out of the house for the first time yesterday morning- and he tiptoed round the garage then disappeared into the kitchen garden- and we wondered if we'd ever see him again. I walked round the property a couple of times but there are any number of places a cat who is the colour of dead leaves could hide- and I knew that unless he chose to declare himself I was unlikely to spot him. Once a stray always a stray? Ah well....

Then at around four o'clock I looked up from the sink and saw him crouched on the window ledge, mewing to be let in.

Yes, that's exactly how it is.

He's decided we'll do.

That's how cats roll. None of that "yes boss I love you" business for them. Either they like YOU or you just don't exist.

Mostly he hangs out with my mother.

It is an incredibly rewarding moment when a cat decides it trusts you.

Proper cat. Patrols the grounds, then becomes a heat-seeking missile.

I'm glad to hear that his first foray into the big wide world was successful. He has clearly shown that he knows where the food and comfy chairs are. :)

We had to do it sometime, but we were nervous in case he decided he wanted to go back to London...

I wonder how far he went. I was watching a documentary the other day in which they put transmitting collars on a number of domestic cats. They all had clearly defined territories, but some stayed close to home while others patrolled a very large area.

He probably didn't go very far first time out, but he will extend it out further and further as he becomes more comfortable.
