In Passing

In the whole of last year I watched 4 movies- and all of them in December. This year I've watched 6. So that's a New Year's resolution I've already honoured.

For the past few days the kitchen has smelt like a pig farm. I looked all over and finally tracked the source to the drip tray at the back of the fridge. There was some stuff in there that looked like liver.

I used to be rather good at faking le sang froid, but these days not so much. I flap easily. Ailz says it's because the move down here has taken me out of my comfort zone.

Ailz is probably right. Also, you're marking time while managing a decline, which is stressful no matter how well you do it.

You're right.

I'm sitting downstairs and my mother is in bed watching TV. I can hear every word because she needs to have the volume up loud and so I know the programme she's watching is a soap she despised when she was in her proper mind.

Do you find films more affecting now you watch fewer of them? I have always been fairly easily moved in the cinema, perhaps by the sense of immersion, but have been very rarely this century, and I watch very little TV drama. Now if I watch a dramatically engaging film I find it quite draining, in a good way.

Actually no. I love the movies, but I rarely find them emotionally affecting. I find I'm seeing them as artworks, artefacts. I'm interested in how they're put together but not particularly engaged or caught up in the action. For instance I watched Sexy Beast last night- and where, once upon a time, I'd have been terrified by Ben Kingsley's performance, now I'm thinking "What a brilliant piece of acting; I've never since anything quite like that before."
