My Mother: Are we going out?

Ailz: You're going to the hairdresser.

My Mother: (In Lady Bracknell mode) The hairdresser!!?

Ailz: For a perm

My Mother: (Even more Bracknell) A perm!!!?

Ailz: Of course we could always see about getting someone in to do your hair at home.

My Mother: (Unimpressed) It's a thought.

Me: Alternatively Ailz could give you a buzz cut with the electric razor.

For some reason no-one took that last suggestion seriously.

She doesn't like going out. She really doesn't. Since she last rode in the car she's lost the ability to fix her own seatbelt. The perm took two hours. Ailz and I went round the charity shops and had a cup of tea in the Village Cafe. When I was paying for the perm my mother called me "darling." I don't think she's ever called me that before. "Darling" was what she called my father and no-one else.

I'm sure that going out is stressful for her.

It is.

And it would be easier for us too if she never left the house.

But...

It's stressful, but it is probably better for her, in the long run. I think stimulation slows the progression of the disease. But, that is a trick bag, because too much stress can accelerate it.

G's mother started confusing him with her husband too. It is not easy, but it sounds as though you're coping as well as anyone could.

did she feel pampered?

sadly not going out
doesn't help
going out less
she uses less of her skills?

don't use it you loose it
is what i was told

sadly in combination with dementia
it seems like a race to no where

do you look like your dad?
maybe your loving her as much as you do
makes her equate the 2 of you?

I don't look all that much like my dad but I have inherited certain mannerisms....

I hope she doesn't actually start thinking you are your father. It's really creepy when an ageing parent does that for real!

I don't think that's what's going on, but who knows?

I wonder sometimes how well she remembers my father.
