Suppose the ancient myths of creation aren't just guesswork and poetry but factual (if befuddled) accounts of the origins of humankind and human civilisation- and suppose those who feature in the myths as gods and other supernatural agents were actually the representatives of technologically and (perhaps) spiritually advanced alien civilisations.

Suppose again that those aliens hung around to observe and guide the development of the civilizations they helped create- and then stepped up their involvement when their creatures split the atom and began to venture out into space.

It's not what they teach us in school, but it's as plausible as the narrative that has everything happen by chance- and it makes sense of a lot of odd and anomalous stuff that the standard histories can't find room for.

You know what, I think I buy it.

(BTW, there's nothing in physics or evolution that says that life or the universe is the result of chance.)

Where did they come from? Other star systems. Where does life come from? Perhaps it didn't come from anywhere; perhaps it just is. Eternity presumably stretches backwards as well as forwards.

I agree with your second point. I'm talking about the culture- which in its general attitude- drags about 100 years behind the science.
