The hospital says my mother's sight has improved since she began the course of injections- which surprises us because it doesn't accord with what we see on a daily basis.

We know, for instance, than she never reads a newspaper story beyond the headline.

But perhaps that has nothing to do with her sight. Perhaps it's because she can no longer hold onto an idea for the length of a paragraph.

Unfortunately, I think you may be right. My own mother in law stopped reading during the last year or so of her life because she could no longer "interpret" the written word.

Yes.

Sadly this also happened with other half's lovely old aunt who had been an avid reader.

My mother perseveres. She spends most of the morning poring over the Daily Telegraph- but I don't think she takes anything in.

seeing is good

moms macular degeneration is too far gone to help
so its good your mom can see
too bad she can't under stand her reading,
think it might help her if you read out loud for her?
it access a different part of her brain.

Occasionally she'll ask me to explain a news story to her. A minute later she'll ask again. And then again. Once she's got into the loop she'll ask five or six times.
