"They" say interstellar travel is impossible, but "they" said the same about powered flight and supersonic flight- and all sorts of other things- so I simply don't believe them.

And if interstellar travel is possible it's more than likely there are civilizations out there that have cracked it.

And if that's the case what's so implausible about aforesaid civilizations wanting to pay us a visit? If we had the technology (and I believe we will eventually) we'd be raring to go.

I'm not saying UFOs are for real (though I think they are) just that I see no very good reason for dismissing them out of hand- apart, that is, for an understandable reluctance to surrender our current (rather cosy) view of the universe.

'They' also said that travelling at over 30mph by rail would suffocate people...............

I've always been a bit on the sceptic side, so I would say UFOs are improbable, but definitely not impossible.

You recent post about dead vs. living universe had me thinking that perhaps I believe in a dead universe, because each individual unit really isn't "life", but they can combine in so many ways that create life, so why shouldn't they have done that elsewhere? (And, for that matter, would we recognise non-carbon-based sentient life if we met it? Or life on a completely different scale from us, possibly with a completely different time-span...)

To me, part of being a sceptic is to accept that there ARE options that are possible even if I personally don't find them probable. And the World would be a dull place if we didn't at least have the OPTION of something we can't even imagine.

There's a lot of evidence for UFOs. I find it hard to believe it can all be explained away.

One can say, why shouldn't it be possible? Mankind also always found ways to get a new energy source, why shouldn't they do so in the future?
One thing that only seems for sure is: If mankind itself develops a flying saucer (for traveling or whatever they want), it won't carry the flag of the United States on its body. That train has long left.

I believe you're right. The first Terran flying saucer coukld well be Chinese or Indian...

There is absolutely no reason to assume that this is the only planet in the universe with evolving life. There is absolutely no reason to assume that life on other planets will evolve even remotely similar to our own evolution. There is absolutely no reason to assume that this other life has not developed a similarly unique culture and technology. There is also no reason to assume that we won't, eventually, figure it out. Remember, they used to believe the world was flat and ships would fall off the edge.

We've come a long way in a very short time. It's only a few thousand years since we first developed script and metal working. I think it would be ridiculous to asume that we've nothing left to learn.
