Moving On

I was lying in the bath this morning mentally disposing of the contents of our house in Oldham.

(We're going to sell it. Have I mentioned this before? I forget. Well, we are.)

These things I will give away, these I will take to the tip, these I may even try to sell.

What a lot of stuff we have.

I remembered this morning that I have a big pile of paper journals dating from the 70s to the 90s. I'd like to put them on the bonfire, but I get indignant when other people destroy the records of their past so I probably won't.

We're agreed that when we're up in Oldham this coming week we'll try and arrange to have The British Heart Foundation come and take a load of furniture off our hands.

Ailz cancelled our contract with BT last week- so we no longer have a land line. How very contemporary we are.

So you have made the decision to move permanently to Kent!
May it all go well!

Thank you.

Yes, we will live with my mother for however long that may be and then we'd like to move to Margate or somewhere close by.

It really is beautiful down that way! I love Kent.

We fell in love with Margate at first sight.

Well at least it is nicer down here. These days the only reason for a land line is to have broadband and some Sky services which my cousin uses.

I imagine the land line will soon become obsolete.

I still have a land line, though I don't like talking on the phone. I'm glad to hear you didn't throw your journals away! I burned some of my own when I was an adolescent and I regret it now. Maybe consider scanning key pages as a project? Just a thought. Or photographing them so they're still legible.

I guess I'll add them to the archive of family papers and photos I seem to be collecting. Hopefully someone younger will eventually take it on.

We have a landline because of numerous instances when there was a large emergency of some sort and the government took over the cell phone lines, but we could still use our landline to contact people. So we'll keep ours even if the only people who call on it are attempting to sell us something.

We have so much stuff it just fills me with despair when I think about moving.

It hadn't ever occurred to me that something like that might happen.

We're going to be brutal about decluttering.

I keep a land line because the sound quality is better and the handset is more comfortable for an extended call. Can't beat the convenience of a cell phone when I'm away from the house, but for a nice conversation with my sweetie or my dad I'll use the land line.

I have found decluttering to be a good thing. It feels good to hand over some things to charity and gain free space in return.

I hate telephones of every variety. I use them as little as I possibly can.

This'll be the biggest decluttering I've ever done- and I'm steeling myself to be merciless.

I suppose it makes sense to sell the Oldham house. Are you okay with that instead of renting it out?

I don't like the idea of being a landlord. What I want is to be shut of the responsibility.

Really hopeful the move will be good for you. But it's always painful! I've often said I'd rather blow up the house than pack to move again! (sigh)

I hate sorting things. So hard...

We still have a land line at home. We're in some damn black hole for cell reception that they seem unable to fix. Very annoying, as people always call our cells, of course. Hard to imagine a world with no land lines, but I'm old enough to remember party lines (which were no party!).

Good luck with it all.

Oh yeah. I remember when you had to call the exchange and have them put the call through for you.
