You wish for a politician who looks and sounds like a real human being and what do you get? You get Boris Johnson.

Of course he wants to be party leader. NB: on matters of substance he's as slippery as all the rest.

He's a neo-con of neo-cons. Give him the top job and- like every other leader since Thatcher- he'll govern in the interests of the bankers. The only difference is he'll do it in the style of Tommy Cooper.

There are an awful lot of skeletons in his closet. Affairs, illegitimate children, dodgy mates, Darius Guppy. Will they come tumbling out if he climbs any higher?

Hope so.

The thought of Boris in charge would have me dusting off my past to ask the Belgians for asylum!

I don't suppose a Johnson administration would be any worse than what we've got.

There's an awful lot of skeletons in his closet...

Nothing that will stick. He has charismatic hair.

And that's the truth.

Ugh, he's vile. The very sight of me throws me into a rage.

People find him amusing. To which I usually reply that we are not voting for the effing Perrier comedy awards, but for people who can lead the country. He is not fit to do so in so many ways. And yet the citizens of Henley then the citizens of London voted for him, presumably as a form of entertainment. I blame celebrity culture.

He's not fit to lead the country: agreed- but who is?

38% of the London electorate turned out for the last Mayoral electorate and Boris got 51% of that vote. So Londoners didn't vote for him, a small percentage (20%?) did.

That's how it's going with elections across the Western world.

Democracy is broken.

Unfortunately, charisma sells - and he's got enough of that "affable charm" to make him seem quite acceptable, until you look at his policies. I suppose the same can be said of Nigel Farage, who managed to lure pretty much the entire UK media establishment into offering him 24x7 coverage in the last bunfight.

Politicians with charm have us eating out of their hands because there are so few of them.
