Jo arrives to get my mother washed and dressed and- as always- finds her going through the morning paper. "Is there anything interesting in the news?" she asks- as always- and my mother- as always- having no memory of what she's been reading- says, "Nothing in particular..."

It reminds me of my grandfather (he is 90) who reads newspapers and books. Everyday I encourage him to tell me what's the news and usually he says: "nothing in particular". But sometimes he tells me really interesting stories :) I like it so much, because still he has interest in life and is able to recall something.

That's good.

My mother seems to retain nothing from her reading. It's just a way for her to pass the time.

It's great that she can still see well enough to read, though.

Yes, though her sight is very bad. She's got an appointment at the eye hospital for tomorrow.

Heh. I don't actually have any dementia or particular memory problems or anything ... but I still kind of do that when reading the newspaper or listening to the radio news. Nothing actually goes into my head; I'm just going through the motions because they're comfortable.

I can see that.

I expect some of it registers at a subconscious level.
