Ailz tells me my morning glass of pure orange juice contains 11 spoonfuls of sugar.

Oh...

Bother....

And I thought I'd made the sensible choice.

I might as well be eating coco pops.

No, coco pops have at least 20 spoons of sugar (and as far as I can determine, very little actual nutritional value).

So I'm on the right track, sort of...

I wouldn't say I was worried about my sugar intake- I don't have a particularly sweet tooth- but I am trying to keep it within reasonable limits.

What fresh fruit juice contains is natural fruit sugar (fructose)not refined sugar.

I do wish the media hadn't created this overblown panic over nothing- as long as you aren't sitting and eating white sugar from a teaspoon all morning, your morning glass of juice is one of your 'five a day' and will do you nothing but good.

Thank you for clearing that up. I completely agree this is a media-based false fear.

Fruit juice is pretty much the same as soda, nutritionally. Which means that it's perfectly reasonable to have in moderation, but is a problem if you're using it as your primary source of fluids.

One of my friends is a pediatrician, and her children drink a glass of juice a day, as a treat. She dilutes it half-and-half with water, first.

If you enjoy drinking juice, there's no reason to give it up; just be aware what it is that you're drinking.

Ironically, fructose is the second-simplest sugar, after glucose, which means that it actually hits your system even HARDER than refined sugar, which is sucrose. However, there is a lot of other stuff in juice, including, if you have orange juice with pulp, fiber, which spreads out its impact and makes it hit your system less hard.

Thanks for that.

I only drink juice first thing in the morning. It helps me wake up. The brand I buy has "bits" in it.

Coco Pops have few if any vitamins, whereas orange juice has lots.

And yes, drinking a gallon of orange juice per day is bad, but one glass should be good. After all, eating any kind of fruit will also give you a serious load of sugar.

(Just read the contents label... Some "orange juice" is little more than orange squash! I drink home-made apple juice, so I know that it takes 3-4 kilos of apples to make a single 75cl bottle - and nothing else is added.)

I drink the store's own budget line orange juice- but it's the real thing- no additives.
