I don't suppose a wild rabbit would ever move all that far from the warren- and Tolkien's behaviour reflects that.

Incidentally, do domestic rabbits that run off fit in well with wild rabbits?

Rabbits are very territorial- and I think a tame rabbit that tried to join a group of wild ones would be seen as an interloper- and chased away.
