Well, Ailz though her mother had read the email and taken it on board and that bucked her up no end.

How do you know she never got it? Did Ailz find it in unsent mail, or just discover a bounced email? It's possible that her mother got it, took it on board, and forgot all about it.

Her mother said she'd seen it in her inbox and then- by mistake- hit a key that deleted it before she got round to reading it.

Of course she might be lying...
