So Secret

I was lying in bed last night thinking of two things that happened when I was approximately six.

The first thing was I told myself a story about a hermaphrodite (a little girl with a penis) who was murdered and torn apart by the other kids for being too pretty.

It was a thing of beauty and shame and so secret that I wince at telling it even now.

I identified with the murdered child.

And the second was how, when I was sick, I asked my grandmother to get me a Bible. She sat by my bed and started reading at Matthew I i. and I said "No, start from the beginning." So we went all the way back to Genesis.

I dodn't think we ever progressed beyond the seven days of Creation. But the point is I didn't want to start in the middle. I wanted the whole story, the whole secret. I really wanted the low-down on this God fella.....

Even if my attention span was this (***) short.

Sex and religion.......

Story of my life.

I read a book one time (I was recovering from surgery) called "Herma". It was about a little girl who was a hermaphrodite, but she could make her penis appear by willing it. And whose male identity was "Herman".

It was an interesting book...

The most I think I've read of the Bible was the Old Testament, when I took a great course two summers abo (Women of the Hebrew Bible).

The only hermaphrodite I've known identified strongly as female and eventually had the surgery to cut off (ahem) the other possibility.

But how fascinating to be happily hermaphrodite and have the ability to swing between genders!

Food can be a comfort.

I just had scrambled eggs on toast with mango chutney on the side. Very satisfying.

It bothers me how religion is gaining ground in politics. It has no business being there. We fought long and hard to eject it and now it's scrabbling back on board.

It bothers me too. Far too often, Bush considers Christian values rather than rights. Especially in terms of his trying to outlaw same-sex marriages, I get furious about his goals.

It's happening all across the world. Here in Britain (probably the most secular country on earth) Blair wants to hand more power and responsibility to "faith" organizations.

There's an "and" in there? LOL. It's been interesting these past few months watching all the great passions of my life -- which for so long have been seemingly contradictory -- merge into one solid way of Herme-Aphroditic living. Very much like an alchemical process...someday maybe I'll get to understand it from the operator's point of view rather than the crucible's.

The two things were certainly at war during the first half of my life. Then I became a pagan and ran a temple dedicated to Hermes, Aphrodite (and the Unconquered Sun.)

Now I'm into a third phase and really don't know where I'm at.
