The RSPB sicced a very slick professional fundraiser onto me last night and I'm still fuming. I hate it that the charities have turned into corporate Goliaths- with swanky London HQs and highly rewarded CEOs. I can see why they've done it but I very much preferred them when they were Davids.

I was spinning off into a fantasy about how we could make money by turning the farm into a wildlife sanctuary and soliciting charitable donations and it was all coming along very nicely when Ailz shut me down because my mother was taking me seriously and getting agitated.

I now have a hard and fast rule that I will not donate to any charity that plays these games.

The first is lifeboats, right?

I don't recognise the others.

Yup, first is the lifeboats, my pet charity, who put well over 95% of their take back into lifeboats and their crews and all their people from the MD down are volunteers.

Ethiopaid is a medical charity which tries to undo the damage caused by FGM.

Gires- Gender Identity, Research and Education Society in which, for obvious reasons, I have a close personal interest. :o)

I also donate to RNLI and Ethiopaid, plus the Salvation Army. Oh, and the Air Ambulance, which is entirely funded by donations.

I got into Ethiopaid because my Meeting for Worship asked me to take that one on when we lived in London some years back and I'm still at it! :o)

Eck. I spotted a vacancy with the RSPB recently and thought "Great, I'd fancy that." Turned out to be a "chugger" job.

I really, really disapprove of chugging.

What's chugging? Over here, it means drinking your beer really really fast -- or moving along deliberately, like a locomotive.

Yeah, it means those things here as well.

It also means begging for charity. The big charities hire people who accost you in the street and carry on like you're their long lost cousin and then try to get you to give money to the charity. It's a foul business.

And most of those doing it are students up to the ears in loan debt who you can't blame for trying to earn a bob or two, which makes it feel even worse when you say no! The entire things is premised upon using a guilt trip.

There needs to be an investigation of the whole sordid charity industry- for such it has become.

I feel the same about call centres. Love the sinner, hate the sin, if you see what I mean.
