That Distinguished Thing

After what seems like ten minutes I look again. Still a quarter to four. I hunt for the little clock I keep on the table. It's not there.
Whoops, I think. Time's come to an end. I must have died.
Obviously the explanation turned out to be wholly mundane. One clock had simply stopped (as clocks do) and the other had fallen on the floor (so that was the noise we heard earlier). Still, I really did think that. Just for a moment...
