Telling the Scots they'll have to stop using our money if they vote for independence (as all three major parties have done in a concerted, pre-emptive strike) is peevish and spiteful- and if I were a Scot I'd be feeling very Braveheart about it.

Do they (the pols) think a failing marriage can be saved by threats?

Really our leaders are such fools.

That said, Wee Eck's own porkies are not helpful. What he is not saying is that if Scotland does go independent and wishes to remain in the EU they'll be required to join both the Eurozone and Schengen.

Does Salmond seriously want a foreign banking system controlling his country's currency?

He's also trying to get votes for assorted Americans and Canadians and others with less Scottish ancestry than me (mine's great grandparental) whilst denying a vote to my English based Scottish husband. Some democrat he!

The SNP are almost certainly going to lose the vote- and Salmond is getting desperate.

All the same I think it's crazy- at a human level- to conduct the Union campaign in such a hostile manner. It think it's counterproductive. Again, whichever way the vote goes the Scots and the English and going to have to live with one another afterwards.

If I were them (the Scots), I would respond: "Then from now on shove up your taves up in your ass."

I guess I would feel the same way - the Scot Nats wanting to have their black bun and eat it, too - be free of Westminster control, but at the same time, benefit from their neighbour's stable currency.

I am not sure whether Scottish North Sea oil money cancels out the amount of tax going in the opposite direction at the moment, but going it alone should mean going it alone.

If I lived there, I would probably vote for independence, all the same. It's a head vs heart thing.

I think this is largely a heart issue and the Westminster pols are making the mistake of treating it as if it were all about money (that being, it sometimes seems, the only thing they understand.)

If I were them I'd be out there singing the praises of the Union. I'd be going on about Stephenson the engineer and Stevenson the writer and all those other great Scots who were also Brits and citizens of the world. But I don't suppose Cameron and Clegg and Osborne know anything about that kind of thing.

There does seem to be some spite in all of this, and I believe this is a concerted effort to scare the Scots to stay in the Union. It might backfire on them, and if it does i would not be surprised.

I think we should be wooing not issuing threats.

Well, my mother seems to believe that people will be enticed to "turn back to God" if they are earthquaked, flooded, droughted, and otherwise tortured sufficiently....I'm always amazed and equally appalled by that line of reasoning. It always makes me think of the abusive boyfriend, you know the kind...."Marry me, you bitch, or I will KILL you slowly and painfully. Then I'll resuscitate you and torture you to death again and again until you LOVE ME like I want and DESERVE to be loved."

Exactly, why would one want to worship a "God" who carries on like that?

My question exactly.

I guess sterling is a bigger and better deal than the koruna.

Opening with 'We will have Sterling and we will have three seats on the MPC' didn't do the SNP any favours. If this is a divorce, then there's negotiation, and there is unreasonable behaviour.

Oh - and there's nothing stopping the Scots using sterling after independence; what the politicians are saying is that they stop having any influence over the economic decisions that are made about sterling.

I wish the Westminster politicians could/would appeal to the Scottish people over the heads of the SNP. They're responding like street fighters- scoring point for point- when they should be painting a picture of the blessings of Union (which are manifold.)

Serve the government right if the Scots went and allied themselves with Scandinavia. There has been some talk of it, how serious the possibility is, I don't know. Historically there have been links, especially in the far north and the Hebrides.

But once again Salmond forgets (or chooses to forget) that Orkney and Shetland folks do not perceive themselves as Scots but as Norwegians and if they'd wish to go anywhere, it's back to Norway.

They've had to be bought off over devolution and they're canny enough to demand a hight price for supporting independence too- devolved government for the northern isles in likely to be the least.

When they talk of 'those beggars sooth' on the islands, they're not referring to Westminster............
