We rearranged the study yesterday. Jenny and Ian, Ailz and I. My mother came in at one stage and said she wished we'd waited until she was dead, but then she sat down with an account book of my grandfather's and forgot she was unhappy. I spent most of the afternoon outside- feeding files and their contents into a brazier.

It started raining mid afternoon. I carried on burning things until it was dark. They say that parts of Britain- and this must be one of them- have had the wettest January since records began.

Indeed - per MeteoGroup, whose app I subscribe to: at 173mm, England & Wales’ January rainfall was 191% above normal versus 1981-2010; going back to 1766, only 1948 was wetter. If that's all averaged, presumably some parts must've exceeded even 1948.

(As I can believe, having tried my previous route to this rather excellent country pub, only to find part of the footpath under a couple inches of rainwater. Still, I suppose it didn't add anything to the time from the station, as I could maintain a brisk pace on the pavement)

I sometimes wonder about my reluctance to toss Stuff ™. After all, much of what little I own has lain in boxes here (and even more further afield) - if I haven't missed it now, why should I suffer it to occupy my living space?

I gather the heavy rainfall has been concentrated in the south of the country- and the north hasn't had any more than usual.

I'm a hoarder too. Our house in Oldham is full of stuff I can't quite bring myself to chuck.
