In earlier years there were sheep in my mother's fields, but the farmer who hired the grazing rights has dropped out of communication and the fields are beginning to revert to a state of nature. My mother used to walk the dog round them but there's no dog any more. I do believe that Matthew and I are the only two people who have set foot in them this year.

There are several warrens- and the rabbits keep the grass down. I'm seeing a lot of toadstools-  black ones, white ones, green ones, orange ones. The orange ones are the right shape for elves to live in and fit with dormer windows.

There's a stream that rises in the field. It's been dry through the summer and the bed is overgrown but after the recent rain there's a glitter of water down among the grasses and brambles and iris leaves. Stand close and you can hear it trickle.

This sounds like one heck of a house - the sale of which would probably fund some very decent residential care if push came to shove.

The house itself is a bit of a wreck (it needs a lot of money spending on it) but it sits on something like 6 acres of Kentish hillside.

On the other hand you could plant a nice vineyard...

My mother has a few vines. Once upon a time she even made her own wine.

That's quite a lovely word picture you paint. I do love the Kentish countryside.

Your life there seems very idyllic to me. I understand how frustrating it is living with your mum, but I actually love wild space quite a lot, and I don't mind living in houses that need a little work.

You might find, when this is all over, that you learn quite a bit about yourself during this time of your life, and that it is, in it's way quite priceless.

Oh, I do hope you take some pictures of the fields - and the toadstools!

And the rabbits. I'm quite fascinated by the idea of countryside in which rabbits are not a pest to be shot at.

I expect the farmers roundabout shoot rabbits. We can afford to be permissive because our land is lying fallow.
