My mother has suddenly lost the use of one of her legs- and it's uncertain whether she'll be able to stay in her 19th century farmhouse, which- among other inconveniences- is full of steps. Ailz and I will be spending the next few days/weeks doing what we can to sort this out- and I don't expect to be visiting LJ much- if at all.

I couldn't sleep last night. Eventually I gave up trying and got up and made myself a cup of tea. While I was drinking it I briskly polished off a cryptic crossword that had baffled me the day before. Who knew one could be so razor-sharp at two o'clock in the morning?

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I guess it must be a small stroke? I hope the sorting goes smoothly, and that you're able to set something up which helps her to live as she wants to.

Thanks. She's been unsteady on her legs for a while now. We don't have a diagnosis for this latest setback but your suggestion is plausible.

maybe they can figure out
why she's been unsteady
and now be able to help
and get her leg back?

sometime it takes something extreme
to for the doctors to finally fix it.

is there anyway she can live on one floor
but driving could be out..
but being out in the country alone is hard

does she have any friends in cottages (community)
were she might be comfortable?

You have my sympathy. My Dad's mobility is declining and he briefly lost the use of both legs a few months ago. Fortunately this time they started working again, but next time they might not.

It's not easy to persuade people who have always lived independently that the time has come to move somewhere designed for those with poor mobility and where help will always be at hand, but trying to soldier on puts a lot of stress on their close family and friends.

Thanks.

My mother is very independent but- when I spoke to her on the phone yesterday- I felt she was prepared to be realistic.

My sister is with her at the moment. We'll have a family conference when we get down there.

So sorry to hear this, Tony. Do they know the cause of the loss of mobility? It's just hard and one is at a loss as to what to do or how to react. We'll be here whenever you return. May it all go as well as possible for you and your mother.

Thanks. We don't have a diagnosis yet. A neighbour took her to the hospital yesterday and she had tests and then blagged her way out. I think they should probably have kept her in.

Sorry to hear about your Ma and I hope things go as well as such things can be expected to.

HUGS

Bad news, difficult times - I hope she recovers. I'm off to see Lovely Auntie today, her daughter thinks it is time she went to residential care. Such a worry, and so sad to see them falter.

I know what you mean. Last week my 85 yo dad fell and they had to call the fire department to come and get him up. My mom had a stent put in her leg yesterday so she wouldn't lose her toes, and this weekend my sisters and I start looking for an assisted living arrangement for them.

Good thoughts for all of you. Check in when you can.

And well done on the crossword; isn't it interesting how the brain works sometimes?

so sorry to hear about this. No doubt this will mean a huge life change for your Mum and it's good that you + Aliz will be there to help at the outset. Darn those ole steps, anyhow!
