Today I start a new diet. I have never followed any kind of diet before. I have always believed that every type of food is of equal value and the main thing is to get enough.

Or- even better- more than enough.

Apparently not.

The basic idea of this diet is that one should eat a certain amount of protein with every meal. And so this morning I had cheese for breakfast- just like a Dutchman. [livejournal.com profile] craftyailz has been following this rule for several weeks and she's been losing weight and gaining energy.

I don't need to lose weight, but I could certainly do with more energy.

Has the cheese worked its wonders? Do I feel better than I normally would around this time?

Could be.

What will I miss?

The potatoes.

Rolled around in olive oil and salt- then roasted.

Actually I can still eat a few potatoes- provided I eat an equal amount of cheese.

Extra-matured New Zealand Cheddar. Stilton. Yorkshire Blue.

The cheese will set me free.

Well, if it works for you, do let me know. I kind of miss my potatoes and rice. I'm currently on Atkins and after two weeks, I've shed nearly 5.5 kgs (on the induction phase). I know I can't maintain that weight loss indefinitely, it wouldn't be healthy for one thing, but so far, except for the potatoes, I do like the diet and can stick with it, which says something. I need to shed 20 kg total, so I'm a quarter of the way there and I'm not expecting miracles.

It's called the Zone Diet. And it was devised by Dr Barry Sears. My wife's been on it a few weeks and it's certainly working for her. She's lost 4 kgs and, just as significant, she's not falling asleep all the time (as she was.)

Ailz is doing well! And she made it through her trip being careful.

Carbs make me sleepy, too. And cheese, although it does tend to have lots of cholesterol, still has less cholesterol than meat. I've begun to read labels, and one hamburger can have something like 65 units of c., whereas the equivalent in even sharp cheddar would be more like 30.

I've been walking more and more, and I've noticed that walking up hills is much easier, so I must be getting back into shape. This week I'm adding an hour's worth of yard work.

Ailz' walking machine: is it quiet or noisy? I was reading about a man who set up his computer on a high table and put a treadmill in front of it, so that he now walks and works!

Sounds difficult to me. And noisy!

This is carrying multi-tasking too far, although I realize Jackie is a woman who walks and reads at the same time.

I've read the Zone diet, in fact I think I have the book buried somewhere in this desk.

Keep us posted, Tony.

I will. I just had cod and cabbage for lunch. No potatoes. It was surprisingly good- and I don't feel sleepy at all.

The walking machine is quite noisy. Leastways I know about it if I'm sitting in the living room watching TV and Ailz decides to put in a spot of exercising overhead.

The Zone is good and sensible. When I started eating more protein and fewer simple carbs (potatoes, white bread, cookies) I had a ton more energy. That is after the first few days of wanting to kill everyone I met.

I never believed in any of this sort of thing until Ailz went on the Zone. I've seen what it's doing for her and now I want a slice too.

mmmmmm....stilton.

if i don't think about it too much, i don't miss bread at all, but i miss potatoes.

don't forget to eat lots of (more or less) fresh veggies...otherwise the cheese will bind you up.

We had lots of cabbage- red and white- for lunch.
And afterwards I ate an orange.:)

It's mighty good stuff.

I'm a vegetarian so my protein options are limited
