It's been raining all over the Christmas period. The sun came out for an hour or two on Boxing Day morning. Somewhere in the middle of it all I got to see the full moon floating in a little envelope of translucent cloud.

They're saying 2012 has been the wettest year in English history.

Ivy is nearly crawling. She waves and says "Hi" and "Bye" interchangeably,

My sister rustled up a huge dinner for nine in her tiny kitchen. My mother made the Christmas pudding.

Th only TV I watched from beginning to end was Victoria Wood's emotionally complicated Loving Miss Hatto and the first episode of Miranda Hart's latest series. Dowton Abbey (which I'd never seen before) was soapy and manipulative; so was Call the Midwife. The new Snowman was a remake of the first with added dog and lousier music. Tim Burton's Alice was as coarse as I'd expected it to be- and even stupider.

Jenny and Ian gave me a collection of John Betjeman's radio talks. He is very good at describing places but annoys me when he gets off on one of his hobbyhorses- town planners (he's against them); Christianity (he's for it).

I completed the Daily Telegraph cryptic crossword a couple of times and helped Aliz and my mother with the quick one.

'They're saying 2012 has been the wettest year in English history.'

I believe they may be correct.

I don't believe I've ever seen so many fields under water as I have this Xmas, driving from Manchester to Kent and back again.

"It was a long wet year . . ."

It's not the rain so much - we are used to that - it's the wind that has caused most of our problems. Our nearest flood was caused by the combination of wind and high tide, rather than rain

Aw.

I like your description of the moon.
