I know it's naive of me, but I when Iearn that the Bishop who has just been arrested on charges of child sex-abuse was once described as "one of the wisest and most godly men in the Christian Church" I find myself pitched into a state of cognitive dissonance.

Because there's a part of me that thinks that wisdom and godliness are not qualities that can co-exist with the abuse of power for sexual gratification.

Alas, I'm getting to the point where I'm shocked if a bishop turns out not to be paedophile. I suppose this is because that's one of the few times they come to my notice.

I had quite a lot to do with Bishops once upon a time. Middle-management types, most of them.

Indeed. Bishop=paedophile or any man/woman of the cloth=paedophile does not compute.
Unfortunately, it has become so common to hear about this that we have to accept it as so. Look what the Catholic Church is dealing with.

The more reports I hear about child sexual abuse and about the different personages who are abusers, the more I wonder if there are "ten good persons" left in "Sodom"? It is frightening. Boy scout leaders - and boy scouts themselves. Teachers. Ministers and priests - and probably rabbis, too. Funny uncles, parents, the "nice" person next door. Child care providers in the day care center. Little league sports coaches and college coaches. And on and on and on. It makes me feel sick.....

They say paedophiles go where the prey is- which is why there's a disproportionate number of them in organisations like the Scouts etc. It's an issue society hasn't wanted to discuss because it's so shameful and distressing.
