Must be some native stock. I've seen a Japanese maple or two around here (very rarely, someone will have planted one as a decorative), and their leaves have been quite distinct in shape -- more like cannabis leaves than the typical maple shape -- and, from what I've seen, they tend to turn bright red in Fall.
