They found the Higgs Boson. I don't know what this means or what the implications are, but I don't feel I can pass by the most important event of the century without at least mentioning it. The BBC's 6 o'clock News relegated it to headline # 2- behind Bob Diamond's appearance before the Commons Select Committee- an everyday story of city folk. I made a point of watching the Channel 4 News to see if they got their priorities right and they did; I thought they might.

Yesterday was also the day Eric Sykes died- one of the comedy heroes of my youth. In old age he started turning up in straight acting roles (he was tremendous in The Others.) It always made me happy to see him.

I spent the afternoon watching tennis. Federer was magisterial.  The match between Murray and Ferrer was a real thriller.

I was woken last night by the rain drumming on our plastic sills. It was so loud I got up and felt around to make sure it wasn't coming into the room.

I am always sorry when people like that are gone. What was he like in The Others?

I remember it as a silent role (I could be wrong). He was sinister and menacing- but, of course, The Others is a film with a twist that makes you re-evaluate everything you've seen- and in the light of which "sinister and menacing" becomes "admonitory and protective".

Sykes had presence. He stood out whatever role he was playing.
