Dot has been talking to the Crem about having Eric's ashes scattered among their rose bushes. They're offering her a package that includes the scattering, his name inscribed in their Book of Remembrance (real vellum, oh my!) and a small memorial tablet in "artificial stone" that will be taken down after ten years. What do you think this will cost-  £25? £50? £75 at the outside? Wrong: more like £1,000. I was telling Judy and she sent me a link to this classic sketch

My goodness. The Episcopal Church in Hatboro PA will bury cremains in a mini-grave for a whole lot less than that.

I've suggested Dot talks to the priest who conducted the funeral, but she's set on scattering the ashes at the crem because it's a family "tradition".

Of course, the trouble with biodegradable urns is there'll be nothing for archaeologists of the future to dig up. We've just got to be grateful the Greeks and Romans didn't have them.

Our funeral director wanted $250 for a small locket that contains a small pinch of ashes of the deceased. My sister got one because her daughter bought it for her. I did not want one, even for free. I think it is a disgrace that they would soak people like that! My ashes are to be scattered over my favorite places in the hopes that they will feed a flower, a tree, or just the grass. The crematory will give the bereaved a cardboard box containing the cremains for no extra fee. Why should I saddle survivors with a big bill after I die? The casket, the preparations, the service, the flowers, the meal, the interment, all can cost thousands of dollars and for what? I wont even be there. I firmly believe that if a family is going to put out that amount, it would be better spent on a great party for the person while he or she is living and able to enjoy it -- or better yet, for a wonderful trip that the person wants to take but cannot afford.
Only my own feelings on the matter, of course, and most would violently disagree with me - at least in my own family.
