Ivy Belle James was born at 6.20 this morning. It was a rough road- everything Alice wanted to avoid- gas and air, epidural, forceps. Mother and daughter are bruised and battered but otherwise in good shape. There are pictures on Facebook.
Ivy is beautiful. Yes, I know, everybody says that about their own, but the truth is some babies are, some aren't, and Ivy definitely is.
People always want to know a baby's weight- can't think why (neither can Alice) but I inquired anyway. Ivy comes in at 7lb 6 oz.
I think I'll go pour myself a glass of wine.

Date: 2012-06-08 01:53 pm (UTC)These days they encourage women to do all these birthing plans, but I don't know why because labour can't really be planned. Elsewhere on LJ, I've just read a friend's account of how the home birth they had planned ended up rather more do-it-yourself than they intended. Labour progressed faster then expected and baby arrived before the midwives did! However, all was well, which is ultimately all that matters and I hope that Alice recovers quickly from the birth.
By the way, I'm delighted to see that the name Ivy is making a comeback. That was my mother's name and has been out of fashion for years. :)

Date: 2012-06-08 02:14 pm (UTC)Alice had very strong views about how the birth should go. She's even been writing a book about it. She hadn't calculated on this final plot twist.
Ivy's a great name. A 19th century name...
