My condolences to you and especially to Ailz. A death is always sad, but it sounds as though Eric just quietly gave up and was ready to slip away.
I hope Ailz managed to get the final EMA done for the children's lit course. I can't have been easy when there was so much stress over Eric's final illness.
Ailz had to stop the course. It was too much for her with everything else that was going on. At least she was spared having to write an essay about PatrickbloodyNess.
I'm sorry to hear that Ailz had to drop out, but I really don't blame her. When I did my first OU degree back in the 80s and early 90s, there were some years when things just got too much and I had to give up on a course.
As you say, at least she was spared the awful Ness books. I think the thing I'm most proud of in my essay was the fact that I managed to hide how much I hated them!
