A Bird On A Wire

That bird I thought was a swallow- I couldn't have been more wrong. It was back today, perching on the wire that crosses the back yard (it was the wire-perching that fooled me.)  This time it lingered and I got my glasses on it- and it turns out to be a goldfinch.

They're not rare, but you don't see too many of them round here. My bird book says they're gregarious so where there's one there'll be many. Hooray!

We have what is called the "Western Lesser Goldfinch." Love these little birds. They usually hide out in the foliage of my small backyard but from time to time venture to the front and the lantana bush that I look out onto when I work. They raise my spirits every time I see them.

Our goldfinches must be the most colourful of our common garden birds.

We have goldfinches too - except when my cat robs the nest, as happened a couple of years ago. Fortunately, they seem undeterred by this -

There were several "didging" about in next door's evergreen the other day. She's got the message insofar that she slinks off in the other direction when I'm watching - and the horrific "row on the back door step" has never been repeated - but I'm not stupid enough to think that my indignation will stop her chasing them -

Cats will be cats -- they chase things that dart about. When it's a mouse we applaud. When it's a bird, we deplore. The cat really does not know the difference. Even a well fed cat will hunt. Indoor cats do not go after birds, but help keep the home free of mice.

True - but they do respond to disapproval - until your back is turned -

Feed them nyger seed, and they'll come flocking...
