Two Things I like And One I don't

We went to our great niece's second birthday party. There were Babies! Well, there was a single baby- our great nephew. I like babies.

Ruth was there. She's just back from France and had a box of Normandy cider for us. I like Normandy cider.

I watched bits of the New Star Trek movie. Kirk was bonking a girl with green skin, then slipped under her bed to ogle her house-mate's gams. Original Trek was sexist, but never as coarsely sexist as this. Shatner's Kirk was fizzing with testosterone but also gallant and chivalrous. I don't like the Star Trek reboot.

I wouldn't watch the new Trek with your observations. Good thing I can't easily catch it here. I'd rather preserve the memories I have of watching the old series with my dad who loved it.

I caught Star Trek when it first came out in the 60s- which, I suppose, means I too must have watched it with my dad (and mum, though she probably slept through it). I'm not a Trekker, but I have some affection for the show- and for TNG and DS9.

I saw most of the new movie and thought it a bit crap. Then my Zimbabwean house mate decided we (she) had to watch "X factor" cue much swearing under my breathe.

J put it on and I lasted about half an hour - the whole fratboy atmosphere was well offputting and I didn't give a damn about ANY of the characters.

I watched half an hour or so out of curiosity, then turned over to The Antiques Roadshow.

I was in the Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corp. It's very frat-like, for reasons obvious. I am sure the Academy is even more so. I've known several graduates of the Virginia Military Institute -- the little Westpoint -- and it is even more frat-like than ROTC.

The officer corp itself is a kind of fraternity. I think any realistic portrayal of how young men behave is going to look a bit like watching overgrown boys doing the usual boy stuff. Put them in uniform, regiment their lives, sequester them away from the general population and this behavior will only intensify. Personally, I rather miss the fraternal aspect.
