Listen folks, this is not the time to quit LJ.

This article  explains what is going on.  LJ is the main platform for free speech in Russia, the hackers are trying to take it down. If we withdraw our custom we're doing exactly what the bad guys want.

Hang on in there.

I've decided that if/when LJ is attacked again, Dreadwidth is not really a viable option because it's been so slow the past couple of days that it was barely usable. It was supposed to be a "problem with some code", but the fact that the slowness has miraculously gone now that LJ is up and running again makes me suspect that it just can't cope with all the extra traffic of people trying to backup their LJs and crosspost to a non-responding site.

But I'm not leaving LJ while there is still an LJ in existence, though I reserve the right to post elsewhere during any downtime and then copy posts across once it's restored.

I think it more likely that DW simply isn't prepared for the userbase that LJ currently has. Their problem with code is probably more a problem with scalability. :,

I use LJ-Archive to back up my livejournal, so at least I have a local copy of everything I have posted. I am pondering other options, but I don't think I'll move to a new blogging platform; most like, I will start a homegrown blog on my own website, and just copy to Livejournal, and that will be my back-up.

The only thing I miss about moving from a PC to a Mac is that there's nothing as good on the Mac platform as LJ-Archive.

I was so glad that I'd learned about LJ-Archive last time there was a problem, so all I was missing was the last few posts. (All is now backed up and from now on, I'l be running it daily!0

I actually have another blog on my own website, but though it may be public, it's public in the sense that giving a speech on the top of Cader Idris on a Wednesday in February is public. Not a lot of people passing by wanting to listen! All my first couple of posts achieved was a trickle of spam comments.

However, now Twitter and Googe+ exist, it no longer matters so much where a blog is hosted. If you write an interesting post, you can link to it from one of the popular social media sites and lots of people will be made aware of it.
